Complete and Partial Dentures

Patients with missing teeth are already familiar with the esthetic concerns of an incomplete smile. Having gaps or being completely toothless is embarrassing, and collapsed lips and cheeks surrounding missing teeth can make you look old before your time. Tooth loss presents functional concerns as well. Missing teeth can make it difficult to bite, chew, and speak normally. Furthermore, remaining teeth will shift to fill in the gaps when teeth are lost, which can contribute to crooked teeth and damage to tooth structure, gums, and jawbone. Dr. Lee can prevent these issues by creating a comfortable, well-fitting complete or partial denture. As a skilled and experienced prosthodontist, Dr. Lee will fit you with an esthetically-pleasing prosthetic that fits perfectly and functions optimally.

What is a complete denture?

A complete denture replaces all of the teeth in the upper or lower dental arch. Also called a full denture, a complete denture consists of a pink base that matches the gum tissue and is topped with artificial teeth made from porcelain or resin. Denture bases are made from hard acrylic.

What is a partial denture?

Partial dentures replace one or several missing teeth. They have the same gum-colored base as a full denture and are topped with replacement teeth to fill in gaps. Also called partials, these prosthetics are held in place with precision attachments or metal claps that fit around existing teeth. Partial dentures can also be made from flexible resin materials.

Why would my denture lose its fit?

While Dr. Lee is highly skilled at creating an ideal denture fit for his patients, bone tissue in the jaw will slowly shrink without natural tooth roots to stimulate it. Your gum tissue can also change shape over time. This will result in a loosening of your denture and irritated gum tissues. Your Coppell prosthodontist has an on-site dental lab in his office for minor adjustments and relining of dentures that have lost their optimal fit. For more extensive changes in fit, he may have your dentures remade in an off-site dental laboratory.
